Three days after the first phase had ended, the script for the play finally arrived at Kana Arima’s house.

“The Doting Goddess— that seems to be the name.”

The recently delivered script was now in Mom’s hands. The second Kana had finished reading it, she heard, “Let me see it.”

When Kana told Mom she had passed the first phase, she got an unimpressed reaction, as if she had done a simple chore expected of her. For Mom, all that talk of desperately groveling on the ground was just some childish antic. Almost like she silently replied “Well, of course you passed; the only surprise would be if you didn’t.”

Her eyes displayed intense eagerness as they devoured the script.

It would be better if you didn’t get so much into it, Kana thought, although that too was a common occurrence. Mom, worried as she always was, just couldn’t resist looking over every single thing involving Kana; trying to stop her would be arguing against a wall.

“The protagonists are the peasant girl and the Goddess… Looks like a classic fable where the virtuous peasant girl is saved by a goddess.”

That seemed to mostly define what The Doting Goddess was.

The play consisted of three acts.

Act One introduced how an average day in the village would go. In the outskirts of a modest village lay the statue of a goddess, which had deteriorated with time.

All the villagers had long ago stopped taking notice of the Goddess; only a single peasant girl continued to show her sincere devotion towards the statue by brushing it.

In time, the statue would grow deeply attached to her, for whom the girl, in turn, cultivated a profound affection.

With the beginning of Act Two, the village, someday, is struck by a massive fire. A scene where their abandonment and disregard for the statue of the Goddess had brought forth their fiery demise. Amongst the chaos, the peasant girl seeks the Goddess statue for salvation, which she is graced with by being miraculously taken away from all the burning horror.

In the third and last act, the now lonely peasant girl, being the only survivor, directs her gratitude towards the Goddess, who then vows, from that moment on, to forever protect the girl.

It wouldn’t even be necessary to add an “And they lived happily ever after,” from how obvious it was. It was just like the typical fables told for children where good is rewarded and evil is punished.

Mom closed the script and looked at Kana.

“If I’m remembering correctly, you and the other girl will have to agree on who gets each role.”

“Yes, that was what they told us.”

“Then, make sure to get the Goddess role.”

Mom continued to speak in an unyielding manner.

“From what I could get out of this script, the Goddess is by far the most prominent character; all the attention will be on her. So you gotta play her if you want to pass the audition.”

Is that really the case… Kana pondered.

She could certainly see where her mom was coming from; yet, knowing
